Eleven holograph account books containing accounts, diary entries, copies of contracts and letters, and miscellaneous notes principally relating to the writing and publishing career of John Warner Barber of New Haven, Connecticut. Clippings and notes are tipped and laid in. One volume contains indexed accounting entries followed by notes relating to the cover title, "Prominent Men in Modern History." A small undated sketchbook entitled "India Ink Drawings Colored When at South Windsor," contains seven hand-drawn pen and ink and hand-colored drawings with captions.

Engraver (of both copper and wood), topographical draftsman, and historian. Born February 2, 1798 in East Windsor, Conn.; apprenticed to Abner Reed, engraver; operated his own engraving business in New Haven; studied history and traveled the eastern U.S., gathering information for the books which he wrote and then illustrated with his engravings; died in New Haven on June 22, 1885.
